Dear list,

we are writing a chapter on "generalized linear mixed models" for a Chapman & Hall book edited by Fitzmaurice, Davidian, Verbeke and Molenberghs. In this connection we are wondering about the origin of the term "generalized linear mixed models". The earliest publication we could find using the term is the Biometrika paper by Gilmour et al. (1985). We would be grateful to hear about any earlier references.

Thanks,

Anders Skrondal and Sophia Rabe-Hesketh
