  POST-GRADUATE BIOINFORMATICIAN/STATISTICAL GENETICIST
Wellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics, University of Oxford

ACADEMIC-RELATED RESEARCH STAFF GRADE IB: £20,044 - £25,565

MolPage (Molecular Phenotyping to Accelerate Genetic Epidemiology) is a
large EU-funded research programme aimed at developing technological and
statistical tools required to exploit information from biological
samples that will increasingly become available in future
epidemiological studies. The development of these tools in MolPage is
aimed specifically at biomarker discovery for metabolic disorders
related to diabetes and cardiovascular disease. However, the tools
developed will be of much wider use in the identification of biomarkers
that predict many differents types of disease, determine risk or
determine response to therapy.

Professor Cardon's statistical genetics group at The Wellcome Trust
Centre for Human Genetics leads the MolPage module aimed at assessing
data variability through the use of twin models. The type of biological
data to be analysed will be of genomic, transcriptomic (micro-array gene
expression), metabonomic, proteomic and peptidomic (NMR/MS) nature.
Professor Cardon and Dr Zondervan now require a statistical
geneticist/bioinformatician to conduct statistical analyses of the
emerging data. A graduate (preferably post-graduate) degree in
statistics, bioinformatics, mathematical biology, or genetic
epidemiology/statistical genetics is essential. The successful candidate
should have experience in applied computational methods in statistical
genetics/genetic epidemiology, and experience with analysis of
transcriptomic, metabonomic or proteomic data is highly desirable.
Experience in variance components analysis or allied methods employed in
twin studies would also be of distinct advantage. The work will involve
close collaboration with other investigators in Molpage and therefore
communication skills and ability to work effectively in a team will be
important. The position is available for 2.5 years in the first
instance and funded by Molpage.
