IMPERIAL COLLEGE LONDON
CENTRE FOR TRANSPORT STUDIES

6 PhD studentships in Multidisciplinary Transport Research

Applications are invited for up to 6 PhD studentships in various aspects of
multidisciplinary transport research.

Each PhD will be co-supervised by a member of the academic staff of the
Centre for Transport Studies and a member of staff from a second
collaborating Department at Imperial.

These PhD studentships offer a unique opportunity for outstanding candidates
to contribute to the development of research at the leading edge of transport
studies.

The topics available include:

1.	The joint modelling and optimisation of transport and
telecommunications network traffic (joint with the Department of Electrical
and Electronic Engineering).

2.	Wireless local area network positioning for dynamic applications (joint
with the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering).

3.	Application of data mining techniques to the detection and analysis of
incidents and anomalies in transport network operation (joint with the
Department of Computing).

4.	Modelling individual“s activity participation and travel decision making
with application to the analysis of energy use in urban systems (joint with the
Centre for Process Systems Engineering).

5.	Exploration and management of supply chain uncertainty in the container
shipping industry (joint with the Tanaka Business School).

6.	Modelling the impacts of aviation and air traffic control on climate
change (joint with the Department of Physics).

The studentships comprise a bursary for three years and payment of College
fees at the home/EU rate. Bursaries may be offered at either full or part
rate. Full bursaries are £12,500 per annum and part bursaries £6,250 per
annum.

The Centre for Transport Studies comprises six academic staff and a vibrant
community of over 50 doctoral students and post doctoral researchers
undertaking research across a broad range of topics including transport
demand modelling, transport policy and regulation, transport operations,
transport and the environment, transport safety, intelligent transport systems,
railway operations and management, air transport operations and control, and
maritime logistics. Further information can be found on the Centre's website
at http://www.imperial.ac.uk/cts.

Applicants for the studentships should have or expect to obtain a first or good
upper second class honours degree or equivalent, in a relevant aspect of
engineering, physical sciences, mathematics, statistics, economics or a closely
related quantitative discipline. A Master's degree in a relevant subject would
be advantageous but is not essential.

Applicants should send an up to date curriculum vitae, full contact details
(including email addresses) of 2 referees (at least one of whom must be an
academic) and a one page personal statement (stating clearly the research
topic you are interested in) to:
