The successful candidate will have a strong Mathematical background with a good knowledge of Statistics. They will be based in the School of Mathematical Sciences. The research is motivated by problems involving changes in fitness of cystic fibrosis patients, in statistical process control, of rates of HIV and AIDS in a certain area, of rates of economic growth or of changes in extreme temperatures. The work will involve becoming familiar with stochastic processes, in particular the theory of Brownian motion and the Brownian bridge and applying theoretical results to practical problems. The doctoral candidate will be supervised by Dr. Gabrielle Kelly, Senior Lecturer of the School of Mathematical Sciences, UCD. Conditions of the award: suitable candidates will normally have attained a high honours standard at degree or masters level in Statistics or Mathematics. The starting date of the position is September 2006. Amount of award: The appointee will receive a stipend of approximately 20,000 euro per year for three years. There will be additional funds for a computer and conference travel. The appointee may also gain teaching experience and further re- numeration by tutoring in the School.
