There was a scheme for PG students about 5 years ago where students who were either over 30 or completely self funding could claim tax relief equivalent to personal tax, 22%. The University would invoice students less 22% and claim the difference from the Inland Revenue. The student had to complete a VTR1 form and the University would then be audited by independent auditors ensuring the claim made to the Inland Revenue was accurate. This scheme was stopped in 2001-02 and I believe the student can claim tax relief direct from their own tax office. They require, I believe is proof of payment made to the University and proof that they are on the course Hope this helps Regards Sonia Sonia Singh Finance Manager Kingston University River House 53-57 High Street Kingston Upon Thames Surrey KT1 1LQ Tel 020 8547 7231 Fax 020 8547 7282 -----Original Message----- From: Admin-student [mailto:[log in to unmask]] On Behalf Of Philip Dummett Sent: 22 February 2006 08:54 To: [log in to unmask] Subject: US TAX FORM Dear Colleagues, A former US Postgraduate student has enquired if there is a form available for claiming tax relief on their educational costs. Erich McElroy (IEFC UK representative) has sent me some information from the US Internal Revenue Service including form 1098T, but it would appear to be only for undergraduate students. I would appreciate any assistance from Colleagues who may have dealt with a similar enquiry, or has information on this subject.
