Dear David

We too don't include the subject of the degree on any certificates for
research degrees (PhD/MPhil/DSc etc) at Bristol but we will provide a
separate formal letter of certification which states the full title of the
research thesis, if required by the student.

One of the reasons for not stating a subject on the degree certificate is
that many research projects do not fit neatly into simple subject areas as
they are highly specialised and so using words such as Engineering or
Computer Science would not reflect an accurate description of the area of
study.

I hope that this is helpful to you.

Best wishes,

Lynzie

Subject: Degree Parchments - Content

Dear Colleagues,

At Queen's we issue degree parchments to graduating students at Doctorate
level which read;

'I hereby certify that (name) was admitted to the degree of 'Doctor of
Philosophy'. on the ..etc'.

We have received a number of enquiries recently from students asking why the
subject area of research cannot be included on the parchment.

Could I ask if any institutions include the research area on degree
parchments - Doctorate level?

Thank you for your assistance.

Regards.
