Does anyone have any experience, or evidence of using Vaseline on blood sampling sites in neonates?
It has come to my recent attention that common practice on our neonatal ward involves smearing Vaseline-style applications to sites where capillary blood samples are to be obtained from. This helps to prevent blood from spilling away from the collection device.
I know of evidence in blood gas analysis where the Vaseline in foetal scalp samples may affect the analysers, but I’m concerned that if laboratory samples are contaminated, then what effects may we see in lab results?
I realise it is a relatively inert substance, but I would like to hear if anyone knows otherwise.
Many thanks
Chris
