Dear All,

Our Delivery Suite has a blood gas analyser, initially for foetal scalp pH measurements, but more frequently these days, for blood gas analysis of cord blood samples.

Base excess is used to determine whether an acidosis is acute or chronic, but in discussion with obstetric and midwifery colleagues, there is some disagreement as to which calculation of Base Excess is the most appropriate in this context, ie BEact or BEecf.

A couple of abstracts obtained from PubMed suggest the BEact (calculated from pH, bicarb, Hb and sO2) rather than the BEecf (calculated from pH and bicarb).

What do other labs use?

Many thanks.

Gareth
