I agree with Anne's response. I would also comment that I learned more about first aid from a 4-day HSE-recognised First Aid at Work course than I did in all my nurse training. I have kept up this qualification ever since, even though I am not expected to do first aid as part of my duties. I do, however, feel more competent to deal with emergencies outside of work if I ever come across them and I never tell a "stranger" casualty that I am a nurse, only that I am a first aider. Is there some literature to say either way? Very Curious Dear Theresa It is in your remit to do what you are competent to undertake with, or without, a First Aid at Work Cert. See Clause 6 of the NMC Code. This is downloadable as a pdf file from the NMC website. The NMC Cod also requires that a nurse should be able to give emergency care, either within or outside the workplace (Clause 8.5). If you do not feel competent to undertake emergency first aid I would suggest a CPR refresher as bare minimum. I do not believe that OH services should automatically offer a treatment service, but I do consider that an OHN who manages the first aid provision within a workplace should be able to do what a first aider would be expected to do --- and more.
