A big thank you to all who replied to my query about digitisation formats and resolutions.
If anyone else is interested, it seems that tiff files are the most popular, although these are usually converted into jpegs for web mounting. The resolution is more of a moot point - 300dpi seems to be usual, although sometimes 600dpi is used, with 72dpi for web mounting.
