Some of Sir Ian Blair's public defenders state that senior people expect
their calls to be recorded by other senior people. Because I'm not in that
world, I don't know if it's true or not. This is the DP issue for me - did
the people Sir Ian was speaking have a reasonable expectation that the calls
would be recorded? Given the reaction reported by the Attorney General's
spokespersons, this interpretation seems unlikely.

Therefore, I vote that this could well be unfair processing, but that as
none of the data subjects is likely to be annoyed enough to complain to the
Information Commissioner, the matter is unlikely to be resolved one way or
another.

The lesson would appear to be that unless you are deliberately attempting to
be secret (and it doesn't sound like Sir Ian was), it's better to be
entirely open, even to the point of stating the obvious.

As to the legality, processing for personal/domestic purposes perhaps?

That said,if it was done from work, with the intention to use in future?

Colleagues will have noticed this story about Ian Blair recording telephone
conversations with officials.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4801032.stm

The BBC only offers a short paragraph on the legalities.

I would be interested to hear colleagues' views.

DPA, RIPA, HRA or all three ?

I think it turns on, in what capacity was he recording the calls.
