Well.... I think that the NULL termination is a good idea but I was 
extremely worried that doing this would cause hard to find bugs. I fell 
foul of this during my testing and now that teh second person has segved 
on only the second attempt to use datGetVC I can see two futures:

   1. Everyone reads the documentation (which surprises me since SUN92 is
      not up to date) and no core dumps ensue
   2. Everyone assumes the Fortran allocation style and random core dumps
      happen.

Clearly #2 is the most likely scenario so I should cave in.
