I haven't checked, but I think the reference is in 'Regulus'. Liz Breuilly ... and now I can't find the reference - in one of the 'Stalky' tales (but not, I think, in 'Stalky & Co.') where a Major and his Minor (the former was allowed to give the latter countenance for two weeks) are summoned by a magnificent flourish of the ground-ash to the Head of Games.
