Are you sure that it wasn't simply named after the guy who was responsible for it. Pitman is a very common surname after all. From the dimensions, could it have been a powder house? Is there any trace of it having been lined with lead sheet - especially the floor? Was it set apart from the other buildings, as it would have been if used for the storage of blasting materials?
