medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

As Marjorie says, there are a number of these, e.g. the painting of the
BVM said to have appeared to Julian of Palermo while he was praying in
the woods at his oratory and now the primary cult object of the
Santuario della Madonna del Romitello at Borgetto (PA).

I will try to look this one up. But I'm really pressed for time right
now and make no guarantees. The end of the first paragraph here doesn't
give me much hope: in this instance, the origin of the name may be unknown:

My dimmish memory about the painting displayed is that it was found, not
too long ago, beneath another, of the sixteenth century, that had been
painted over it. I don't know whether the figure at lower right
(seemingly a donor) has been satisafactorily identified. There's a
literature on medieval and early modern painting in Sardinia, but it's
really outside my interests and experience.

Best,
John Dillon
