LIBRARIES
5.1 Free with Words project
The current 'Free with Words' project, running in the five prisons in
Wales, is beginning to attract people who have never before visited Libraries,
into the prison Library. It would be great, if they could then on release, make
the link with their local Library, and continue to develop confidence in
reading, and exploring the range of services on offer in the Public Library
Service.
Louise Richards is collecting information about each of Wales Library
Services/Authorities for inclusion in an exit pack, which she is to design for
prisoners on their release.
She would like to include information leaflets covering general and
children's services within each authority. She would also like to ask for
information on any joining incentives or specific services/projects, that may be
operating within your Library Services, which may help to support or entice
people at risk of social inclusion into their Libraries - ie RaW, Community
Education classes, Reading Groups etc.
Please send to:

15.1 Quandry over historic library
South Wales Echo 28/11/05
Senior
councillors are being recommended this week to declare the 105-year-old
Grangetown Library in Redlaver Street surplus to requirements, and either sell
it for conversion or redevelopment as apartments. A new library and learning
centre is being built at Havelock Place.
15.2 Hi-tech fingerprint scanner in school
library
South Wales Echo 22/11/05
The pupils at
Trelai Primary in Cardiff are now using their thumb print and a computerised
library system to register when they return and borrow books. The software
called Junior Librarian was installed in the new school library. Using each
child's thumb print and a scanner instead of a library card it helps to keep
track of all the stock as well as a record of all the books children have
borrowed.
15.3 Plaid MP stamps foot over Royal
Mail
Daily Post 25/11/05
Plaid Cymru's Adam Price launched a campaign to force the Royal Mail to do more to recognise Welsh culture and history.
He is enraged at the organisation's failure to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the composition of Mae Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau, the National Anthem of Wales.
Mr Price said he would also like to see stamps commemorating the establishment of the National Eisteddfod, the University of Wales, the National Library and the National Museum.
