Therapeutic communities for Addicts in the Czech Republic – Roots, Recent Development  and Present Profiles

Kamil Kalina (Centre for Addictology, 1st Medical School, Charles University, Prague)

Therapeutic communities in general have a long history in the Czech Republic (western part of former Czechoslovakia).  In 1948, Prof Jaroslav Skala established in Prague University Hospital the first residential unit for alcohol treatment, close to TC principles. In 60s, works of Jones and Main influenced directly both Skala´s unit and several newly established hospital-based TC for neurotic patients. Since 70s, there has been developed a unique informal system of training in group psychotherapy (SUR), based on TC principles. This stimulated another wave of TC (mainly for psychoses and personality disordres). After 1990, under new political conditions, autonomous TC for drug addicts came as a third generation.  These TC are mostly professional  (however ex-users are appreciated members of therapeutic teams) and can be seen as a specific mixture of „hierarchic“ and „democratic“ models.

There are 15 TC for addicts working on independent basis and another 12 hospital based residential units for alcohol and drug treatment  on TC principles. In 2005 all autonomous TC were assessed according to professional kriteria of good practice (governmental project supervised by the autor). Coincidently, another assessment by a checklist combining critera of  „hierarchic“ and „democratic“ models has been done by  the author as part of his research. Preliminary conclusion of both two projects will be presented in the article with an aim to decribe a specific profile or profiles of  TC for addicts in the Czech Republic.

Subject: Seeking Articles for TC Journal

Dear Colleagues,

You may or may not be aware that Barbara Rawlings, George De Leon and myself are editing a special addictions issue of the International Journal of Therapeutic Communities.

We are urgently seeking previously unpublished articles.  Articles should be related to work in addiction TCs and will preferably include some original evaluation although we are prepared to consider purely descriptive articles also.  The editors are prepared to offer assistance in “cleaning up” original drafts, ensuring accurate English punctuation, grammar etc.  if necessary, before articles are sent for peer review.

Unfortunately, the timing is fairly tight and we will need to receive final drafts by late November, early December.

Please feel free to circulate this invitation to any colleagues you think might be interested.

Best wishes
