Rick Maenofferen Slate Quarry has not worked underground for about 10 years. There have been various attempts to work rock from the surface in that area (by the owners, Greaves Welsh Slate) and the ground around is now much disturbed. When I walked past the site on a Saturday in late July, an excavator was parked in the small quarry behind the mill (David Jones Quarry), and this was obviously being used during the week. Work here had blocked, what I have been told, was the 'emergency exit' from the mine. The gate leading to the main incline was secure (and the access to 'Cookes Level' was dug away some years ago). I have also been lead to believe that the lowest levels of the mine have been allowed to flood.
