Good news for study group members who are not BSA members but would like
to participate in the BSA Annual Conference!

The issue has been that many of the study groups are
cross-disciplinary, their discussions and networking involving
non-sociologists and non-BSA members and the conference fees for
non-BSA
members is, quite properly, set at a much higher rate than for BSA
members.

As a result, I am delighted to let you know that, on a trial basis,
the BSA is offering a "Special Discount" rate at the 2006 BSA Annual
Conference at Harrogate to all BSA study group members who are not
members of the Association. The discount is 10%.

This will mean that there will be three levels of conference
registration fees, as follows:

FULL CONFERENCE:

A. NON-MEMBER RATE = £410

B. NON-MEMBER BSA STUDY GROUP RATE = £369 (10% DISCOUNT)

C. BSA MEMBER RATE = £330

DAY RATE:

A. NON-MEMBER RATE = £250

B. NON-MEMBER BSA STUDY GROUP RATE = £225 (10% DISCOUNT)

C. BSA MEMBER RATE = £185

A note about concessionary members

The concessionary rate is only available to BSA Members and for full
conference attendance only. The rate is £115. Study group members who
are not already members of the BSA and are eligible for the
concessionary rate of membership, can join the BSA at the
concessionary
rate (the 2006 rate will be set on 30 September but will be about
£26). Together with £115, this means that they would pay £141, which is
still very reasonable.

The Executive Committee agreed that the discount rate should not
appear on the BSA website or on the official booking form yet, since this is
a trial, but rather that it should be advertised direct to the study
groups as a special discount promotion via an email to you for you to
pass on to your members.

A special study group booking form has been produced with the discount
rates on, ready for you to send out to your members (this is in two
parts, which I attach now).

The deadline for abstract submissions is 30 September.

Please advise your members to submit their abstracts as soon as
possible using the abstract submission form (attached) and remind them
to use the special discount booking form when booking/registering for
the conference.

The Harrogate International Centre is an excellent venue and we have
secured a range of accommodation at rates to suit all budgets. For
further details about Harrogate, the conference theme, programme and
accommodation, please go to the BSA website: www.britsoc.co.uk
<http://www5.gmx.net/de/cgi/derefer?TYPE=1&DEST=http%3A%2F%2Fwww%2Ebritsoc%2Eco%2Euk>

and
click on the conference advert on the home page.

I hope you will feel, as I do, that this is a significant step forward
in a longstanding debate which might enable you to bring a much more
interesting range of study group specific papers to the 2006
conference.

Together with the conference venue and accommodation changes, I think
this is a very exciting new phase in the development of the BSA.
