Not sure if he was first, but William Stukeley made the connection between cropmarks and archaeology, for example at Great Chesterford in Essex.

I have been asked (why is it always me?) who first spotted that cropmarks could be used for locating buried archaeology.

I think it was Gilbert White in his Natural History of Selbourne but you may know different!
