The National Library of Wales is hosting an exhibition of Sir Kyffin

2.6. New TalNet Website

… TalNet was established as a co-operative service by the library services
of Conwy County Borough Council, Gwynedd Council and Anglesey County

2.7. CyMAL’s Disability Summer School

… a training event for delegates from museums, archives and libraries and
representatives from access and disability groups. The Wales Edition of the
Disability Portfolio, revised by CyMAL, consists of 12 guides to help staff
in museums, archives and libraries become more accessible to people with
disabilities.



2.10. Publishing Trade Awards

… The Awards, co-ordinated by the Welsh Books Council, will recognise the
successes of the publishing industry and honour the best sellers in various
categories. The important role of public libraries in the process of reading
will be recognised by rewarding the books which were borrowed most
frequently through libraries in Wales.

2.4 Minister announces details of a major review of public services

First Minister, Rhodri Morgan, announced in July that the review, which is
part of the Assembly Government’s Delivering the Connections action plan,
would be led by Sir Jeremy Beecham, Vice Chair of the Local Government
Association in England.

5.1 Sourcing and Purchasing Books from Wales
The Welsh Books Council recently commissioned two reports on the sourcing
and purchasing of books by libraries in Wales. One report focused on Welsh
Writing in English while the other concentrated on Welsh-languague books.
The reports and recommendations, produced by Professor Hywel Robert, have
now been published and can be viewed on the Book Council’s website.

People from ethnic minorities are under-represented in the workforce of
museums, libraries and archives. Since 2003-04 the East Midlands Museums,
Libraries and Archives Council (EMMLAC) has provided a number of Positive

Master’s course in Museum Studies at the University of Leicester.

The National Library Visits Carmarthen
The National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth visited Carmarthen for the first
time ever on Friday 23rd September to show what it can offer the people of
the area. Many items of interest from the Carmarthen area are held at the
Library, the most well-known being the original copy of the Black Book of
Carmarthen, which dates from around 1250.

15.1 CatalogCymru
Archives and Records Council Wales has been awarded a grant by

CyMAL to undertake an audit of uncatalogued archival collections in Wales
and to carry out research into cataloguing, indexing and appraisal practices
in Wales. It is seeking to

appoint a project manager and two project officers to undertake this work.

15.2 Internet Makes the Archive World Smaller

Archives Network Wales is a free searchable website
(www.archivesnetworkwales.info) giving details of more than 5,000 archive
collections held by local authority and university archive services, RCAHMW
and the National Library of Wales. It has been created by Archives and
Records Council Wales with the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund.  It was
launched on 22 September.

15.3 Secrets of medieval Wales revealed

The results of a painstaking study of medieval life in rural Wales are
uncovered in a new book launched on 22 September.

Houses and History in the March of Wales: Radnorshire 1400-1800 is published
by the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales,
and is available from the Royal Commission at £30 (+£5.80p&p). Information
about sites featured in the book is also available through the Commission's
free online database, www.coflein.gov.uk .

College's award joy

The Vale Advertiser 9/9/05

THE Coleg Llandrillo Cymru library resource service has been awarded the
Gold Award Grade One for excellence following an inspection by the Council
of Learning Resources in Colleges (CoLRiC).

Llandrillo is the only college in Wales to hold this honour and one of only
nine in the UK to have been awarded a Grade One.
