The recent House of Commons Select Committee report on Public Libraries stated that it was “clear that a significant barrier to library use was shabby buildings”. A new website, Designing Libraries www.designinglibraries.org.uk (developed at Aberystwyth) aims to change that by giving an insight into the best, new, extended and refurbished public library buildings. Designed as a series of checklists, it will take the group through the process of developing a Local Interpretation Plan (LIP) from start to finish, and help them to firm up what may initially be quite vague ideas into a workable plan. A useful resource for any museum, archive or library looking to assist and collaborate with community groups, it can be used in conjunction with the Inspring Learning Action Checklists. The conference is part of the celebrations of the 1855 Act, and will look at various aspects of modern public library design.
