What does this involve?:

What is FOLIO?
a.. FOLIO is a programme of online learning for health librarians. FOLIO forms part of the NLH Librarian Development Programme which was established to provide support for librarians moving into new roles, focusing on the development of skills in health informatics and knowledge management, especially related to digital libraries.

b.. For an overview of the FOLIO programme, see the 'FOLIO: Off-the-shelf learning for librarians' presentation [Delivered on June 3rd 2004 at the 'Supporting Online Learning 2: Embedding and Linking' seminar, run by the Northwest Multimedia and Information Technology Group].

Why online learning?
a.. FOLIO was set up because librarians often find it difficult to get away from the workplace to attend training, whether because of staff shortages, limited budgets, travel time or other difficulties.
How has FOLIO come about?
a.. FOLIO was introduced as a pilot during Spring 2003, to deliver online training to librarians at a time and place convenient to them. Read the evaluation report of the pilot.
What will FOLIO look like?
a.. The FOLIO programme will build on lessons learned during the pilot. The programme will comprise 12 modules delivered over 2 years. There will be 40 places available on each module.
Who is involved?
a.. FOLIO is delivered by a team based at ScHARR, University of Sheffield. It is commissioned by the National Library for Health.

b.. The FOLIO Curriculum Group determines the syllabus. The group includes representatives from the CILIP Health Libraries Group and the LKDN Workforce Development Group; an e-learning expert; a graduate of the FOLIO pilot; as well as suppliers and commissioners. The group is informed by a training needs analysis completed in Autumn 2003. How long will the course take to complete?

For the production of a good portfolio, students should spend about 2-4 hours per week on the G2G tasks and exercises.

How much does the course cost?

Costs for the UK-version of the course are being met by the NLH Librarian Development Programme. The course is therefore free at the point of delivery.

What if I have to miss a few days due to holidays or work commitments?

It is possible to "catch up" within a two week extension automatically offered at the end of the course.

      What if I work part-time?

Previous participants have found it possible to complete FOLIO courses even when working on a part-time basis. Part-time participants will particularly benefit from the two week extension offered at the end of each course.

Can I join part-way through the course?

Unfortunately due to issues concerning group dynamics, together with administrative arrangements, it is only possible to participate if you have pre-registered for the course. However we naturally hope that the course will be so successful that it will be repeated on a later occasion!
