medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture >Now, here is the text of the Easter Sequence: >Victimae paschali laudes immolent Christiani. >Agnus redemit oves: Christus innocens Patri reconciliavit peccatores. >Mors et vita duello conflixere mirando: dux vitae mortuus, regnat vivus. >Dic nobis, Maria, quid vidisti in via? >Sepulchrum Christi viventis: et gloriam vidi resurgentis. >Angelicos testes, sudarium, et vestes. >Surrexit Christus spes mea: praecedet vos in Galilaeam. >Scimus Christum surrexisse a mortuis vere: tu nobis, victor Rex, miserere. >Amen. Alleluia. The text is traditionally attributed to Wipo of Burgundy (d. 1050). It is one of the four sequences retained after the Council of Trent. It has a wonderful melody. The version Bill gave is the modern, sanitized version of the sequence; it lacks the paired line of the last versicle, before 'Scimus Christum': Credendum est magis soli Marie veraci, quam Judeorum turbe fallaci. Since this line appears in medieval and Renaissance motet settings of the sequence (there is a famous one by Josquin, which has the music of two French songs in the upper voice), it has sometimes proved problematic in modern performances.
