2) Minutes of the last meeting

There were no corrections to the Minutes or matters arising not covered elsewhere on the agenda.

3)      Training

John Moore reported on the ‘Mapping the Way’ training day in March. This proved to be a very successful event, with 37 delegates attending few of whom were already members of the BCS. A wide cross section of professionals had collected at the University of Newcastle. There was a continued demand for training and John noted that the MCG should keep it a priority, perhaps addressing such issues as digitisation and GIS. It is important to identify at whom the sessions should be aimed. He thanked all those who had been involved in the organisation of the day.

Geraldine Beech reported on the recent Society of Archivists day at the National Archives. This had been a combination of Archive and conservation issues with over thirty people attending from all over the country. Most of them were not full time map professionals and very keen to learn more.

Dave Watt noted the great need for digital data information. Seppe Casseratti mentioned that the government is keen to increase the use of digital data and is concerned about the creation of adequate metadata. To this end it has developed the metadata creation software MetaGenie which can be downloaded from the following website <www.askgiraffe.org.uk/metadata/metagenie.html>. Seppe also mentioned the importance of connecting with the Intra-governmental Group on Geographic Information (IGGI). Philip Woodhall mentioned the various NLS projects, Ken Atherton, his Office of Deputy Prime Minister contacts and John Moore the doubts from certain quarters as to whether there was enough GIS support in universities.

Eunice Gill is the National Archives representative on IGGI and noted that IGGI was arranging a seminar for people using GIS for the first time. Seppe emphasised the yawning gap between GIS users and professionals charged with record keeping; and thus the opportunity for the Map Curators’ Group to identify areas that can be covered with IGGI, the AGI, etc. The meeting decided that Eunice should be given a mandate to explore the matter further at the forthcoming IGGI meeting.

John Moore proposed that a date in the latter half of 2005 should be aimed at for a further training day, with the former organising team retained (Lynda Bailey, April Carlucci, Nick Millea, John Moore, Dave Watt) with the addition of Kimberley Kowal and input from Eunice as appropriate.

Ken Atherton reported on the financial side of the last training day. As the break-even figure of 25 people had been comfortably surpassed a surplus of £924.17 had been made.

4)      Reports

April Carlucci reported briefly on the continued discussions of BRICMICS.

5) New web site for UK Map Curators, Archivists and Librarians

April Carlucci reported that the content of this new website was in the process of being converted to html. Contributions, suggestions and updates are always welcome. Ann Sutherland also emphasised the importance of keeping the directory current and noted the retirement of Ken Winch as the map librarian at Harper Collins and identified his successor as David Jameson.

6)      LIBER

Copies of Nick Millea’s biennial UK report to LIBER were available for distribution. Anne Taylor reported on the LIBER Conference that had just taken place in Cambridge. The papers from this conference would in due course be placed on the LIBER web site. A note from Paul Ferguson, was read out: “I have just returned from a great week at the LIBER conference, Cambridge. Anne Taylor organised a wonderful event with attention paid to every detail.” This was echoed by those present who attended the event and Anne was thanked for organising such a good event.

7)      Cartographiti

Tinho da Cruz thanked colleagues for their support for Cartographiti. He noted that he was eager to have ideas for inclusion and volunteers to write pieces.

8)      Forthcoming events

Ann Sutherland asked for ideas for the next year’s Map Curators’ Workshop which will take place in Plymouth. The following events were mentioned:

Curators of Early Maps meeting (Hungary, July 2005);
