Apologies for cross-listing... Call for Papers Annual Meeting of the Association of American Geographers (AAG) 2006 Chicago, IL, 7-11 March Organizers: Katharine Meehan, University of Arizona W. Scott Whitlock, University of Arizona Description: Feminist political ecology: rethinking the "F" word Ten years ago, the book "Feminist Political Ecology" made room at the table for feminist critiques and a grammar of gender in human-environment studies. We honor that. And in the spirit of unlocking possibilities, this session synthesizes further developments in gender and social theory with political ecology, attempting to redress epistemological and empirical anxieties that unsettle the sub-field. From "where's the ecology" to "what IS the ecology", debates run deep: such as the urban/rural analytical split, unstable subjectivities and the ethics of non-human agency, race and nature, the role of geospatial technology, faultlines between human and physical methodology, gender politics, and more. This paper session wrestles with these issues, but in ways that critically re-open political ecology --drawing on gender-based understandings of agency, corporeality, materiality, activism, anti-essentialist approaches, and a praxis of academic engagement. We hope to open theoretical dialogue and encourage new approaches in the nitty-gritty of social and environmental change. We welcome papers that address these issues. If you are interested in participating, please contact Katie Meehan, University of Arizona ([log in to unmask]). Thank you! ------------------------------------------------ Katharine Meehan PhD student Department of Geography and Regional Development University of Arizona [log in to unmask]
