medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Dear all (especially Marjorie, Christopher and Frank),

Yes, there are times when rules go out the window, and this is clearly one. I am with my students for our annual summer programme in Italy, and several of them who are from London were - and still are to some extent - extremely shaken by the atrocity of yesterday's events, and the way their helplessness was heightened by their physical distance from loved ones, and the technological difficulties encountered when trying to telephone home and finding it impossible to get through.

Let me say something, please, regarding 'the kindness of strangers'. In a sense, the people of Massa Marittima are no strangers to me or to my institution, which has established and run a summer programme in this wonderful Tuscan town since 1998. Still, every year they host new cohorts of our students as if they were family, and yesterday they acted as such: many businesses and individuals, just to give one example, called our students from the streets and into their shops and homes, and invited the students to use their landline telephones so that they would have a better chance of reaching their family and friends.

My students are most grateful, as am I. There are some good people on this earth, and it is good to be with them at times such as this.

George

I believe, in this circumstance, the list adopts this
extraordinary procedure by acclamation.

The Lord be with us all!
