Sorry to bore
But this is just what you are talking about (attached)
The stuff the pilots were doing and the tales they told were fascinating

We must take up the recommendations in the report, and get the story
told to more people, extend our range of contacts, advocates etc.

Subject: Why we need to celebrate public libraries and collect real
evidence of the true impact we make

Oh how right Frank is, it is the small differences we make to people's
lives that make the real impact, but these are never reported. It is
really time that we started collecting real evidence of the true impact
libraries can make. Here for example are some of the ways the library
service in Luton has improved the lives of local people;

It coaching session on how to access the Internet. A mother desperately
seeking information on what her newly diagnosed diabetic daughter can
eat, attended a training session and was then able to access not only
reliable current information on
her daughter's diabetic condition , but also a number of web sites
with reliable recipes she could use. The daughter will have more
interesting meals as a result and the mothers anxiety level has been
reduced.

Adult Literacy sessions,a Reading for Pleasure course resulted in a
dyslexic mother attending the session taking a book home and getting so
much pleasure from what she read , she has now started to encourage the
famliy to not only use the library, but is confident enough to help her
son with his own particular needs.

Spoken Word on CDs - a post lady has no time to read at home, because
she is caring for her young children, however, she reports she has a
walkman and is getting much pleasure from listening to good reads as she
walks along delivering the mail.

Adult book groups, Luton has a Visually Impaired Book group which meets
monthly, this enables a number of isolated partially sighted people to
meet up, have an enjoyable chat and learn about new books/ talking books
they might enjoy. This has been particularly useful for an 89 year old
and also a lady confined to a wheelchair .

Such evidence is frequently missed as it is anecdotal, but we are making
a true impact to the quality of people's lives and should not only be
collecting examples of this but also publicising the work we do.
