I apologise for any multiple postings, and I apologise for the short notice. I would like to draw your attention to the following symposium at the Gondwana 12 meeting in Mendoza, Argentina from November 6-11, 2005 (The most up to date information about Gondwana 12 is at: http://cig.museo.unlp.edu.ar/gondwana/ ):

S5b "Late Palaeozoic to end Mesozoic events" (A.P.M. Vaughan; B.C. Storey)

This General Symposium (No. S5b) will focus on the active margin of Gondwana from the Late Palaeozoic through to the end of the Mesozoic. Papers are invited that address terrane processes and describe related regional studies along the Australides from Australia through to South America, and the interaction between terrane accretion and supercontinent break-up.

New isotope and geochemical techniques, combined with regional scale multidisciplinary studies, have produced major new insights into the evolution of the Gondwana margin in the Phanerozoic. Terrane processes were active prior to and during break-up of the supercontinent with implications for palaeoenvironmental and tectonic interpretations. This symposium seeks to bring together terrane specialists in a range of disciplines, with a focus on the following topics:

o Late Palaeozoic and Mesozoic terrane accretion along the Pacific margin of Gondwana (Australides)
o Terrane transport mechanisms
o Detrital processes and sedimentary provenance
o Tracing of terrane sources using Ar-Ar, Hf and SHRIMP
o Palaeoenvironmental and palaeobiogeographical implications of terrane movements
o Geochemical tracers of terrane deep structure
o Pressure-temperature-time evolution
o Interactions between marginal and interior processes during break-up
o Aerogeophysical and remote sensing of terranes and terrane boundaries
o Palaeomagnetism
o GIS

An abstract volume will be published as a Bulletin of the Academia Nacional de Ciencias, Argentina.

Abstracts for talks and posters must be in English and should be submitted for review by the Organising Committee. They must be sent by e-mail to [log in to unmask] with the subject "Abstract Submission".

The abstract should be in single-spaced, on a single A4 page, with the text fitting within a 16 x 23 cm box, including references. Figures cannot be included.

The format of the Abstract should be as follows:

Title: Times New Roman 14pt, bold, Centred.
Authors: Times New Roman 12pt, bold, Centred.
Addresses: Times New Roman 10pt, italics, Centred.
Text: Times New Roman 10pt, left and right justified.
References: Times New Roman 8pt, please use GEOLOGY style.

Publications: the organising committee together with the symposia conveners will prepare proposals for full publication of papers resulting from the meeting, hopefully to include thematic issues in Gondwana Research, Journal of South American Earth Sciences and a Special Publication of the Geological Society, London.

Due to numerous requests from intending contributors, the deadline for abstract submission has been postponed to July 22, 2005.

Please do your utmost to meet this new deadline, as we cannot guarantee acceptance for anything received beyond this date.

Bryan Storey and I look forward to hearing from you.

With best wishes,

Alan
