Excuse me butting in to a debate on a subject that doesn't concern me, but I'm reminded of the issue of the place of arithmetic in a modern school education. Should one teach children arithmetic as it was taught to my generation, learning one's multiplication tables and all, or is that redundant when you can just show a child how to use a pocket calculator? Personally I think one should not be taught anything in such a way that one becomes dependent on technology.
