MRC PhD Studentship "Experience of disability, perceived quality of life and their influence on reproductive decision making"

Closing date 19th July

Institute of Health Sciences and Public Health Research, Faculty of Medicine and Health, University of Leeds.

We are pleased to announce a studentship for full-time study towards a PhD commencing late September 2005. The successful applicant will work on a project relating to experience of disability, perceived quality of life and their influence on reproductive decision making. Continuing developments in prenatal genetic technologies mean that parents increasingly face difficult decisions in relation to their unborn children. As these decisions can have such long-term consequences it is important to understand how these decisions are influenced and made, in order to better support parents and minimise any harmful outcomes of these technologies.

The project will be supervised by Professor Jenny Hewison (Professor of the Psychology of Health Care), Dr Carol Chu (Consultant in Clinical Genetics) and Mr Gerald Mason (Consultant in Feto-Maternal Medicine). All supervisors have extensive research experience in related topics and successful track records in PhD supervision.

This studentship will be held for 3.5 years (inclusive of 6th month funded overtime period) and will cover academic fees, an initial £12,000 maintenance grant, £2,500 research training support per annum and £200 travel award per annum. The studentship is open to suitable applicants from UK, EU or overseas, subject to Home Office regulations, but only home/EU fees are paid by the studentship. Please see MRC website for full details of MRC studentships http://www.mrc.ac.uk/index/funding/funding-personal_awards/funding-studentship.htm.

Applicants should normally hold (or expect to hold) a good Upper Second or First Class degree in a relevant discipline or a higher degree at masters level or sufficient professional experience and research experience to compensate. The studentship will be awarded on academic merit. The studentship is only tenable for study at the University of Leeds.
In addition to the training and support provided within the studentship supervision, the University of Leeds offers a comprehensive programme of training courses for postgraduate students, please see http://www.leeds.ac.uk/sddu/gts/research.htm for details.

Informal enquiries about the project should be directed to Professor Jenny Hewison (0113 343 1894 or [log in to unmask]) or Dr Louise Bryant (0113 343 1882 or [log in to unmask]). Application forms can be obtained from Louise Emmott on 0113 343 7497 or email: [log in to unmask] Together with the application forms, applicants should submit a covering letter, CV, and a statement (1,000 words maximum) indicating why they are applying for the studentship and why they consider themselves to be a suitable candidate.
