CZS/1/42) Postgraduate Studentship in Health Services Research Chief Scientist Office (Scottish Executive) 3 years (2005-2008) £12,000 per annum + fees We are looking for a bright and enthusiastic person to fill a studentship has been funded by the Scottish Executive Health Department to assist in the development of appropriate measures of diabetes care from the perspective of service users. The research will also be formulated in ways that enable local service providers to implement such measures in order to improve the quality of diabetes care in the NHS Scotland. The project involves an integration of qualitative and quantitative methods, the focus being on the development of sensitive and discriminating measures to produce distinct survey instruments for use within a number of organisational contexts. The doctoral student will develop a conceptual understanding of the research and conduct literature reviews in order to finalise the research design, prior to conducting interviews with stakeholder groups and developing and executing survey instruments in the field. The student will also statistically analyse the data and evaluate the results within the relevant organisational contexts. Opportunities will be made available to develop and enhance these and other personal and professional skills throughout the studentship. Dr Andrew Thompson (School of Social and Political Studies, University of Edinburgh) will be the principal supervisor. Additional supervisory support will be provided by Dr Julia Lawton and Dr Bruce Guthrie. The studentship provides registration fees, an annual maintenance grant of £12,000, and other research expenses. All interested applicants must have a good, first degree (2i or above) or a Masters degree in a relevant discipline (social science or health services research). A keen interest in developing a mixed methods approach based on qualitative and quantitative methods is essential.
