medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Phyllis Jestice <[log in to unmask]> wrote:
Today (1. June) is the feast day of: Justin Martyr (d. c. 165) Justin was an adult convert to
Christianity. Since he had had a good classical education, he ended up debating about Christianity with philosophers, opened a school of philosophy in Rome, and wrote about the merits of Christianity over Judaism. He fell foul of a Cynic in Rome, who denounced him to the
authorities, whereupon he was flogged and then beheaded.

Respondeo:

His head does seem to have been preserved along with the rest of his body, though, if the monks of Downside Abbey are to be believed. A few years ago I was attending a conference there - organised by our own Carolyn Muessig and attended doubtless by many reading this posting. I went through a mysterious and inviting door, rather like the Sleeping Beauty, except for the beauty (also I was awake). Inside I found a glass case containing a pile of human bones, with a skull on the top. A card informed me that these were the relics of Justin Martyr. When I asked one of the brethren how they came to have such a relic, he replied "Didn't know we had him."

Bill.
