Today their are two monasteries called "Valamo" (or "Valaam"), one is
located in present Finland, the other at the original site in today's
Russia. At the web site http://www.valamo.fi/ one can read: "The chronicles
of Valamo Monastery record that it was founded on the island of Valamo in
Lake Ladoga, Karelia, in the 10th century by the monk Sergei. No consensus
or certainty exists in this matter, but most people regard it as more
propable that the monastery was founded around the mid-12th century."

At http://www.valaam.ru/ it says: "It seems possible to reconcile both
opinions about the cloister foundation time: the old monastic life on Valaam
after the 11th century could be interrupted, and then recommence on the edge
of the 14-15th centuries. Perhaps, in future scientists will find new
historical sources throwing more light upon the old history of the Valaam
monastery."
