medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Today (14. June) is the feast day of:

Gerold (d. 806) Gerold was a Frankish courtier who left
Charlemagne's court to become a monk at Fontenelle. G. was made
bishop of Evreux, but in his old age returned to his monastery.

Methodius I of Constantinople (d. 847) Methodius was a native of
Syracuse who went off to Constantinople to make his fortune at the
imperial court but ended up becoming a monk instead. He became an
assistant to Patriarch Nicephorus, and joined him in opposing
iconoclasm. M joined Nicephorus in exile, but he returned in 821
with a letter from the pope asking that Nicephorus be restored to his
see. The emperor was not pleased, and had M flogged and imprisoned
for seven years. When the iconoclast decrees were repealed in 842,
M. was named patriarch.

Joseph the Hymnographer (d. 886) Joseph (celebrated on 3. April in
the eastern church) was another native of Sicily. He fled in 830 in
face of a Muslim invasion, and became a monk in Thessalonike. From
there he moved to the Studion monastery in Constantinople. But he
got in trouble by opposing imperial iconoclast policy, and fled
Constantinople in 841. The ship he was on was captured by pirates,
though, so J. had a detour of a few years of enslavement on Crete.
He escaped, returned to Constantinople, founded a monastery, and
ended up as bishop of Thessalonike. J. was a famous poet and
hymn-writer, said to have composed 1000 works.
