Interdisciplinary Community Development: International Perspectives

A Special Issue of the Journal of Community Practice

Special Editors

Alice K. Johnson Butterfield, University of Illinois at Chicago, USA Yossi
Korazim-Korosy, The Interdisciplinary Forum for Community Development,
Israel

The field of community development has experienced increasing specialization
and rapid growth over the past 20 years. In the United States, for example,
professional training in community development is a major domain of schools
of urban planning, while in Israel, community development is taught almost
exclusively by schools of social work. Often, as a result of professional or
organizational affiliations, the disciplines represented in community
development practice are fragmented and in search of unifying themes and
perspectives. At the same time, the international expansion of community
development in urban and rural areas finds workers from various
disciplines-geography, public policy and administration, social work,
education, public health and so on-joining forces around issues of mutual
concern such as poverty, health, housing, and the environment. In this age
of globalization, it is important to understand interdisciplinary practice
in community development in the international context. This special issue
recognizes the importance of interdisciplinary research, practice, and
teaching and encourages contributions that advance innovation in community
development.

The Editors of the Journal of Community Practice invite manuscripts that
describe and analyze various aspects of interdisciplinary practice in
community development from around the globe, including:

The status of interdisciplinary community development in a country, or a
region of the world Theory, principles, models, and practices of
interdisciplinary community development Case studies that illustrate best
practices in interdisciplinary community development Challenges, strengths,
and outcomes of interdisciplinary practice, teaching and research
Interdisciplinary community organizations and their development Human
rights, social justice, and social change in interdisciplinary community
development
