medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

As a protestant this is really starting to confuse me.  To my way of thinking, Saints (those who are redeemed) go immediately to heaven and always have.  The New Testament is the authority.

So, one cannot know _for sure_ the eternal destiny of a Christian who dies.  This much I would suggest was already, in its broad contours, available in the early centuries.

I don't know what NT references you have in mind for the claim that "saints" (I assume you mean all the elect or the saved or believers???) go directly to heaven <SNIP>
The idea that all Believers go directly to heaven not only denigrates the General Resurrection but also makes a General Resurrection superfluous. Such a view also is contrary to the Creed. "And he shall come again, with glory, to judge both the quick and the dead." [Kai palin ercomenon meta doxhV krinai zwntaV kai nekrouV ]
