medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Today (27. May) is the feast day of:

Restituta of Sora (d. c. 271) A Roman who was martyred during the
Aurelian persecution. Legend adds interesting details: R. was
brought to Sora by an angel. She lived with a widow, whom she cured
of leprosy and converted (along with 30 members of the household).
She was arrested, flogged, and chained in prison. Her convenient
angel released her from the chains. She and three companions were
then beheaded.

Eutropius of Orange (d. c. 476) Eutropius, a native of Marseilles,
had a wild youth but reformed when he married. After his wife died
he became a priest and in time was named bishop of Orange. He helped
rebuild the city after the Visigoths had visited.

Augustine of Canterbury (d. 604) The Roman Augustine was prior of
the monastery of St. Andrew's in Rome. He and about 40 monks were
shipped off to Kent in 596 by Gregory the Great. Augustine doesn't
seem to have been very happy about the idea; he tried to turn back
part way, but Gregory wouldn't let him. Augustine ended up as a very
successful missionary and first archbishop of Canterbury. He and St.
Aidan can both lay claim to the title "apostle of the English." He
died on May 26.

Melangell (?) Melangell (or Monacella) is the subject of Welsh
legend, which tells that she was the daughter of an Irish (or Scots)
king who fled to Powys to escape marriage. The prince granted her
land (after being impressed when a hare he was hunting took refuge
with M), she attracted disciples, formed a community, and ruled as
abbess for 37 years.
