Subject: RA post, Looking for the 'intelligence' in emotional intelligence, Psychology,
University of Edinburgh

Dear Colleagues,

I’m currently advertising an RA post and would be very grateful if you could pass the details below on to anyone in your group who might be interested.

Apologies in advance if you get this message more than once, I don’t have an advertising budget, so am emailing fairly intensively.

Best wishes,

Elizabeth Austin

Applications are invited for a research assistant post to work on a project funded by the Leverhulme Trust entitled ‘Looking for the “intelligence” in emotional intelligence’.  The successful candidate will be responsible for running a study of the associations between psychometric intelligence, emotional intelligence and performance on tasks involving the processing of emotional and non-emotional information.  The post is available for a fixed term of one year from 1st September 2005

Candidates for this post should have a Ph.D. in psychology, or equivalent research experience.  They should have experience of running research studies in psychology, including participant recruitment, running of experimental sessions and data analysis.  A background in individual differences/psychometrics would be an advantage.

Further project details:

The main objective of the project is to examine the extent to which emotional intelligence (EI) as assessed by the standard performance measure (MSCEIT) relates to (a) fluid and crystallised ability and (b) performance on inspection time (IT) tasks in which emotional and non-emotional information is processed and (c) the IPT-15, a social perception task.  The results will shed light on the extent to which EI really can be regarded as an ‘intelligence’.  The association of self-reported EI with psychometric intelligence, performance EI and IT task performance will also be investigated.

Organisational details:

The Research Fellow will be based in the Psychology department under the supervision of Dr. E. J. Austin.

Duties and responsibilities of the post

1.   Recruitment of participants and scheduling of experimental sessions.

2.   Running experimental sessions.

3.   Scoring of ability tests.

4.   Data entry and checking.

5.   Data analysis using SPSS.

6.   Writing up of results for publication/conference presentation and assisting with the writing of the final report on the grant.

Salary is on the AR1A scale up to £21,640
