Tim,

I woke up one of my ancient colleagues who is a former OS surveyor and
he says that 'Defaced' is/was a mereing term used by the OS which means
that the part or all of an item originally surveyed to mark a boundary
has since been removed.

Subject: The word Defaced on old OS map

A colleague was looking at an 1849 copy of OS 1:10560 Lancashire sheet
71 today and noticed the words 'Defaced' printed in two places close to
Princes Colliery. There are several other collieries in the area
(Brandwoods and Closes) and a number of Old Coal Pits, but nowhere else
does 'Defaced' appear. Does anyone know whether the words refer to the
pit or are simply some OS code - for example a defaced Bench Mark?
