Well, in terms of Art History, there's always this book to start:

His conclusions have sparked lots of debate, but that book still shows up in the bibliography of almost every work on 14th c Tuscan art. For an interesting "state of the scholarship" kind of discussion, see Hayden Maginnis' book _Painting in the Age of Giotto_, especially Chapter 8 ("The Mid-Century and the Mannered Style") where he specifically focuses on Meiss' work and its impact.
