medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture In the authorised liturgical books, the form of the Litany of the Saints has long been varied for different occasions and uses. Although for a relatively brief period changes were forbidden, rubrics in recent years have again allowed for expansion and contraction of the list of saints invoked, as well as other petitions, to accommodate local usage, patrons, and customs. Since about the mid 70's, some local congregations have begun to add modern saints or those considered 'martyrs' even if not canonized, or even RC. ML King is certainly not unusual, and Dorothy Day is often heard. The parish I attended in NYC for Easter Vigil this year added Oscar Romero and the female religious recently murdered in Brazil's rain forest to the list we used. (Sorry, her name escapes me at the moment.) As for the 'original' Catherine, that may be tough to track, given the fluid nature of the listing in its earlier days. The Litany was centuries old before Catherine of Siena was born, so she's not a candidate for 'original.' If memory serves, your 'of A' was commonly added to the list of virgin martyrs from an early point, so IMHO your wondering seems logical and a good possibility.
