medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Today (14. April) is the feast day of:

Ardalion (d. c. 300?) This probably fictional story tells that
Ardalion was an actor. While acting out a parody of a Christian on
stage, he was suddenly struck with compunction and converted to
Christianity. He announced this to the audience, was arrested, and
ended up burned alive.

Lambert of Lyons (d. 688) Lambert was raised at the court of Clothar
III. He became a monk at Fontenelles and succeeded St. Wandregisilus
as abbot in 666. L. went on to found the monastery of Donzere and in
c. 679 was named archbishop of Lyons.

Bernard of Tiron (d. 1117) Bernard was a French monk who served as
prior of St. Sabinus (near Poitiers?). After 20 years of monastic
life he went off to become a hermit at Craon. He went back to his
original monastery as abbot, but resigned after a dispute and went
back to the forest. B. became one of the leading "Wanderprediger" of
the early twelfth century, preaching moral reform and apparently the
papal reform program. In 1109 he built a monastery in the forest of
Tiron; this became the mother house of a large congregation. B's
cult was confirmed in 1861.

Caradoc (d. 1124) Caradoc was a Welsh harper at the court of Prince
Rhysap Tewdwr of South Wales. He became a monk and then a hermit.

Benezet (d. 1184) A Savoyard shepherd, Benezet's piety took a
practical form: he followed orders given him in a vision and built a
bridge across the Rhone. So many miracles occurred at B's tomb that
a chapel was built on the bridge as a shrine for his body.

Lidwina of Schiedam (blessed) (d. 1433) Lydwina was born to a
working-class family in Holland. She was injured at the age of 16 in
an ice-skating accident and was an invalid for the rest of her life.
Starting in 1407 she experienced ecstasies and visions. She's one of
those female mystics who survived for years on no nourishment but the
eucharistic elements. L's cult was approved in 1890.
