SUPPORTING CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS
7 June 2005, Edinburgh

'I dont like reading because I couldont read very well. I couldont keep up with my class. I was the lowest in my class becouse dyslexias ..... If I didnt have dyslexeia I wood be a brilaint reader.'

This statement by a twelve-year-old boy graphically demonstrates some of the problems faced by children with special educational needs and also some of the challenges their needs pose for libraries. Huge numbers of children have learning difficulties of one sort or another. All too often such children experience social exclusion, denied equal opportunities and

their right to appropriate library provision is insufficiently met. The Start with the Child* report highlights the need for

training for library staff on special educational needs.
