DISCERN Treatment Workshop 28 April 2005

DISCERN© Treatment www.discern.org.uk is a tool for appraising the quality
of health information on treatment choices, and is used in a range of
international settings. It is applicable to a wide range of treatment
information including online information.

DISCERN is used to:

* Enable information users and providers to assess the quality of
written information on treatment choices and to select appropriate
information

* Facilitate the production of high quality information on treatment
choices by setting standards and providing a reference point for authors

* Raise awareness of health information quality issues and promote
shared decision-making skills amongst professional and patient groups

The University of Oxford is offering a half-day workshop for anyone
interested in exploring health information quality issues and learning to
apply DISCERN.

The 3 hour session includes:

* An overview of the context and methodology underlying the
development of DISCERN

* A practical exercise using DISCERN to appraise a patient
information leaflet and to discuss quality issues in a group setting

* Opportunity to explore how DISCERN can help participants in their
own settings

* An overview of other useful resources for selecting and producing
health information.

The workshop is open to anyone who uses or produces health information,
including health professionals and patients, carers and their
representatives. Discounts are available for patients and carers.

The workshop will be held at the Department of Continuing Education, Rewley
House, Oxford.
