NOTTINGHAM TRENT UNIVERSITY GRADUATE SCHOOL College of Business, Law and Social Sciences Funded PhD Opportunities The Nottingham Trent University Graduate School is pleased to offer fully-funded opportunities to study for a PhD in the applied social sciences, to commence in October 2005 for three years: * Two ESRC CASE studentships are available: - one for research on the needs of elderly people who retire abroad, with Age Concern England - one on birth parent's experience of the adoption process, with the Southwell Diocesan Council for Family Care. * Nottingham Trent University is also offering university-funded PhD studentships, to be awarded by open competition. The Graduate School is recognised by ESRC for both 1+3 and +3 routes to PhD. Applicants for these opportunities should have a good social sciences degree in a discipline relevant to the topic, and have already completed, or expect to complete by October 2005, an ESRC-recognised masters course. Candidates for CASE studentships must also be able to show a willingness and aptitude for team working with both academic supervisors and the collaborating agency. FUTHER DETAILS: ESRC CASE STUDENTSHIPS The Nottingham Trent Graduate School has recently been successful in the annual competition run by the Economic and Social Research Council for studentships to fund students to undertake a PhD project jointly managed by the university and an external organisation. Both studentships will pay course fees, together with a stipend of at least £13300 a year and reasonable research costs. TWO studentships are available, as follows (i) Retirement migration, the 'other story': Citizenship, transnational social networks and quality of life - to be run in collaboration with Age Concern England The project will investigate the needs and expectations of older British adults in Spain as their resources for independent living diminish. Through the study of their lived experience, the project will identify the challenges faced by older migrants and the support networks that are available to them in both countries. This project will be one of the first in-depth pieces of research to reach vulnerable older migrants, as previous research has tended to focus on those in good health. Previous employment experience is desirable, along with knowledge of current debates on demographic ageing and social inclusion. The ability to speak Spanish would be a distinct advantage. (ii) The birth parent and the evolution of adoption practice in England since 1926 - to be run in conjunction with the Southwell Diocesan Council for Family Care. The project will use the archives of Family Care for a historical study of changes of adoption policies and practices since 1926, with special emphasis on the experience of the birth parent. Candidates should have understanding and/or experience in children's services and be able to demonstrate sensitivity towards the issues surrounding birth records counselling. Knowledge of the field of adoption policy and practice would be an advantage, as would experience of community-based research that involved interviewing vulnerable adults about sensitive issues, and experience of surveying, cataloguing and analysing documents. (iii) NOTTINGHAM TRENT UNIVERSITY POSTGRADUATE RESEARCH STUDENTSHIP COMPETITION This competition will be announced shortly, via the national press.
