<<ole4.bmp>> <<ole5.bmp>> <<ole6.bmp>> Job profile The Department of Sociology and Anthropology at the Universiteit van Amsterdam invites applications for a full-time position at the rank of Full Professor (Hoogleraar) in the field of urban sociology. Eligible candidates will be expected to assume the role of Research Director of IMES. Candidates should have research and teaching interests in the field of ethnic and cultural diversity in urban areas, broadly defined, in preference in comparative international perspective with a creative use of a variety of research techniques and methodologies. The department is particularly interested in candidates who can place their specialised research and teaching in the broader context of the discipline and the social sciences in general. Salary will depend on qualifications and experience, ranging from 4,517 EUR to 6,592 EUR gross per month, plus pension and contractual benefits.

Contemporary scholarship in Sociology has consistently devoted considerable attention to the City and the growing diversity and complexity of the urban environment. The emergence and transformation of diverse lifestyles and subcultures, the frequent changes in relationships within and among social groups, and the dynamism of public-private sector interaction demand scholarly attention. The contemporary discipline places the city at the centre of global-local networks and flows of information, services, and migration. Migration, combined with cultural and geographical diversity and/or separation raise the classic issues of integration, inequality, and social cohesion.

The professorship is one of four core disciplinary Chairs in Sociology in the Department. The successful candidate will be responsible for the leadership of both research and teaching activities and for enhancing the national and international profile of the discipline at the University. Teaching duties will involve leadership and development of the curriculum in the field of urban sociology at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including the English-language MA in Migration and Ethnic Studies offered by the ISHSS. Successful candidates will be expected to contribute more generally to introductory teaching in the Sociology curriculum, teaching in the area of sociological theory, and both quantitative and qualitative social science research methods at both the BA and MA levels. An active role in the training and supervision of PhD candidates is expected. The Chair, as Director of IMES, will also play a leadership and supervisory role in developing the research activities of a team of some twenty researchers, including PhD candidates and postdoctoral fellows. This involves multidisciplinary co-operation with active researchers from other departments who are also members of IMES. The Director will have overall responsibility for the research programme and budget of the Institute. Successful candidates will also be responsible for sharing with other Chairs, responsibility for the overall administration of the Department in the context of the University.
