Could Perennial Grain Crops be the Future of Sustainable Food Production?

Annual grain crops currently provide 70% of humanity’s food energy needs.
However, there is growing concern about the sustainability of such systems,
in terms of their impacts on nutrient cycling, soil conservation and water
management, and their excessive use of irreplaceable fossil fuels. Some
scientists are now suggesting that perennial grain crops could be an answer
to this problem.

These issues are discussed in the March issue of the journal Renewable
Agriculture and Food Systems, which is solely devoted to discussing the
potential of perennial grain crops.
