Dear Colleague, A wide range of tools are available to create and deliver online assessment, but how do you select the most appropriate one? What features should you look for in such tools and how can they be used most effectively? Netskills are pleased to announce the release of the new workshop 'e-Assessment: Tools and Techniques'. This one-day workshop is intended for teaching practitioners and support staff who would like to use the web for assessment. Participants will have the opportunity to evaluate a range of assessment tools as well as to learn practical techniques for their effective use. Particular emphasis will be given to the recently released assessment system TOIA, which was developed as part of the JISC Exchange for Learning (X4L) programme and is available free of charge to UK further and higher education institutions. The workshop will also investigate international standards for online assessment (such as IMS QTI) and how their implementation by assessment tools allows interoperability with other systems such as VLEs and the sharing and re-use of assessments. By selecting an appropriate set of such tools, practitioners will be able to move easily into online assessment without being locked into a proprietary system. The first workshop is on Wednesday April 13th at the University of Newcastle and places are available to book now. * Note that this workshop benefits from a subsidy reducing the cost to just £65 per person.* The event details and booking form are available from: http://www.netskills.ac.uk/workshops/event/ncl-apr05-eassess- r1/ Whilst intended as a stand-alone session, this would make an ideal follow-up for the Netskills workshop 'Assessment and Communications for e-Learning' which deals with pedagogical aspects of the design of online assessment as well as implementation issues. It also supports a new unit of the BTEC-accredited Netskills Professional Development Certificate in e-Learning.
