If we take e-learning to be any learning which uses electronic tools we
can perhaps then look at what tools are best for particular students,
subjects, institutions, teachers. I think that there is some perception
that a highly structured VLE ( e.g., WebCT, Blackboard, etc) is not the
only or the best e-learning tool.
In many cases, a well-structured intranet with good quality standards
for content, availability and currency may meet the need. This can sit
on a standard network file system, using, eg, Apache's autoindexing.
I think also that there is increasing interest in Content Management
Systems which allow cataloguing and indexing of content, grouping users,
managing access and easy communication. Is there is a move towards tools
that avoid the rigidity of the virtual classroom while providing
'community-type' access to resources and shared discussion space?

Patrick
